Bhaavya Roy:One of the most important aspects of my work as a photographer is creating a safe, empowering space for the model — especially when they’re new or feeling nervous. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that technical skills are only half the equation. The other half is emotional intelligence. When a model steps onto a set, particularly if it’s their first time, there’s a natural vulnerability in front of the camera. I never take that lightly.

The first thing I do is take a few minutes to connect on a human level before I even lift the camera. I introduce myself, talk about the vision for the shoot, and encourage them to share anything they might be feeling anxious about. I want them to feel seen — not just as a subject, but as a collaborator. Communication is everything. I let them know that we’re in this together and that there’s no pressure to “perform.”

During the shoot, I guide them gently. I’ll demonstrate poses, suggest movements, and sometimes play music to lighten the mood. My direction is always rooted in positive reinforcement — phrases like, “That’s perfect,” “Let’s try a softer expression here,” or “You’re doing great.” Even small affirmations help build their confidence, frame by frame.

Another thing I do is keep the atmosphere light and collaborative. Laughter, conversation, even taking breaks when needed — it all contributes to making the model feel like they belong. If someone’s stiff or overthinking, I’ll switch to candid shots, ask them to move naturally, or even have them do something as simple as walking or fixing their hair. The goal is always to capture their most authentic self.

What I’ve learned as Bhaavya Roy is that great portraits don’t come from perfect poses — they come from moments of trust. And once a model feels that trust, even the most inexperienced can deliver something breathtaking. My job is to bring out that spark in them, no matter where they’re starting from. READ MORE
